Scarves… The variety is indeed mind blowing including handmade ones and designer creations to sweep you off your feet. You can wear these as over your dress or as outerwear because these pieces simply look irresistible.

Although, one in silk is considered as the latest fashion accessory today, you can still choose from a number of fabrics including rayon, wool or polyester. A piece made from sheer fabrics is used increasingly as a headscarf. Categorized on the basis of different beautifying techniques used by designers, scarves can be woven, knitted, machine made or simply hand-made ones.

1. Embroidered scarves carry the unique work-pattern found in traditional scarves worn during the Roman times and hence, are reminiscent of their history. One can see a marvelous display of appliqu work by the expert artisans. Another common scarf happens to be made of wool. It has always been in demand for being warm, comfortable and convenient to carry. Made from fleece of sheep, it can match any of your winter wear.

2. A hand-painted piece is an example of beautiful interplay of skill and creativity at its best. It usually exhibits a play of intricate designs and colors to cast a lasting spell on the wearer. This unique accessory can be made from fabrics including cotton, wool, chiffon, satin or georgette. It can be used for any purpose from being a simple neck scarf to hip scarf, beach scarf and what not.

3. Next is the knitted scarf. This piece is used as a fashion accessory and has become an important part of any woman’s wardrobe. New experiments are being done by the artisans to bring exclusive designer pieces for the fashion conscious milieu. Common fabrics used in making a knitted one are wool, pashmina or cotton. Available in different sizes and shapes, it can be worn as a winter, head or neck scarf.

4. A scarf in silk is believed to have its origin during 1000 B.C. when it was worn by warriors of a renowned Chinese Emperor Cheng. Such is made from woven fabric material and helps to keep the body warm and comfortable during the winters. However, it’s equally good to be worn during the summers or just in any season you like as it adds flair to your personality.

5. A bandana scarf is becoming increasingly common these days, thanks to the changing fashion trends. It is derived from the Hindi word ‘bandhana’, which means ‘to tie’. It has beautiful play of contrast and matching colors with bold, exquisite designs to go with any of your outfit. It adds a sparkle to any simple or drab piece of clothing.

6. A beaded scarf is embellished with beads of varied colors and sizes to give it a special look. Beads used in making such exclusive pieces of clothing can be glass, plastic and metallic beads. Different designs and patterns are made using such beads on the cloth. A sequine scarf is somewhat similar to the beaded version. However, the difference lies in the fact that it is decorated with star-like adornments to form exclusive designs.

Mica lamp shades date back to the 1930s, makings its appearance along with the earliest electric lamps. These beautiful mica lamp shades produce a warm soft light; bringing a sense of soft beauty and style into the bedroom, living room. Mica is group of silicate minerals and the word mica is derived from the Latin word micare which means to glitter. Mica produces a marble look and mica lamp shades are easy to make and you can do it yourself as well.

Before you start on your mica lamp shades project, you should check if you have a tape measure, a metal lampshade (with strong frame) and shears. Now purchase the amount of mica sheets you require to make the mica lamp shades. It comes in four colors, dark amber, standard amber, stained amber and white. If you have a lamp shade that you may already have at home and decide which area you would be adding the mica too, or if you plan to do a full mica lamp shade, then measure the entire shade. Once the amount is decided purchase your mica sheets.

Cut the mica sheets into the desired measurement. Slip it into the metal lampshade or fit into desired areas. Hold mica sheets in place with glue or tape or if you have tabs at the back of the fold, fold them in to hold the sheet in place. Mica lamp shades can be designed by using circular or square or even rectangular shaped rims.

If you dont have a metal frame to make your mica lamp shades, dont worry there is another option, though it may require a little more work! Take 4 or 6 coat hangers. Bend one of those hangers into the shape of a circle. Use a mug or a round container to get the desired shape. Do the same with another hanger and make it larger so that it can be the lower rim. Take 3 or 4 hanger pieces cut to the same measurement and connect both rims with them leaving equal spaces between them. Now comes the slightly harder part.

Take 3 hanger pieces which have been put to the same measurement. Taking a separate hanger bend it to the shape of a small circular, large enough to rest on the bulb rim. You can attach these by using thick wire and then attach it to the lower rim. Then place it on the blub rim. Make sure it is properly balanced. Now take the mica sheets and drill small holes in the corners each sheets (4 holes). Taking 3 inch sections of craft wire attach the mica to the rims, both up and down. Check if it is firmly placed. And now you have your very own home made mica lamp shade. You can use stencils and paint on your lampshade to add a little bit of color if you desire.
