Media round-up: April Fools’ Day 2008

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Many media outlets traditionally deliberately spread hoaxes on April Fools’ Day, including notable quality sources such as National Geographic and Science.

The popular British tabloid The Sun wrote that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to undergo stretch surgery to make him taller than his wife, Italian artist and model Carla Bruni. The report claimed the 5 foot 5 inch leader would be made 5 inches taller in one year using a method by Israeli professor Ura Schmuck. The Sun noted that during his visit to Britain last week, Sarkozy had high-heel shoes while his wife wore a pair of flat pumps.

The Guardian on the other hand ran an article that suggested that Carla would head an initiative by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to bring more glamour, good taste and sophistication to the U.K. general population. This would involve collaboration with Marks & Spencer for high-street fashion and Jamie Oliver for meals and wine.

BBC News had real-looking footage of flying penguins fronted by documentary host Terry Jones, which were actually an advertisement for its new iPlayer.

How Coaching Changed My Life

Submitted by: Louise Yates

Just six years ago, aged 38 I was at a crossroads in my life. My children were growing up fast and at school, we had just moved house and was getting to grips with living in a new and rather isolated rural community and having had an fulfilling career break taking me out of the working arena for most of these 7 years I was wondering how and when I should enter back into the world of work.

Previously I had enjoyed a successful career in various training and development roles in Blue Chip companies. I loved what I did, had worked my way up to a senior position with sizeable responsibilities and if I hadn t decided to devote my time to my family no doubt I would have still been climbing the corporate ladder.

My first thought was to do some research start understanding the current trends in training and development and start retraining myself to raise both my competence and confidence levels. It was at this point that coaching stood out. And the more I researched the more it stood out as a powerful intervention here to stay. I knew a little about coaching from the work I had done in other companies but felt I needed to know more so within a couple of weeks I enrolled on a programme and took my first step to becoming a certified coach.

Little did I know however where this first step would take me. Now six years on I have my own successful coaching company working with a wide range of amazing clients, (most of whom are business owners in their own right), I absolutely love the work I do, I regularly undertake public speaking engagements, and I have a work-life balance that is second to none. Added to this I am now working on an exciting project which I hope will enable me to make a difference to people s lives worldwide.

Most people who know me would say that whilst my core values have never changed I am now a much more confident and fulfilled person who knows what they want from life.

So what has happened in these years? I have undertaken numerous programmes to develop myself as a coach. If you are to become a good coach you have to walk the talk and take your own personal development seriously. This isn t only from a credibility point of view, if you don t other coaches will and you will get left behind. But the great thing about training to be a coach with a good coaching school is that you not only develop your skills to coach professionally, you also get to experience your own personal development journey and come out stronger, braver and more confident as a result.

And of course I have my own coach. If you fully embrace the development you go through then anything is possible. I never cease to be amazed by some of the great work that great coaches get involved in.

So how else has coaching impacted upon my life? Apart from a total career transformation, as my children step into their teenage years I now feel better equipped to understand and guide them through this crucial stage of their life. I find that relationships are easier to manage and even after over 20 years together I am able to enjoy a great relationship with my husband. And crucially I now know what is important to me and have a clear set of values which act as my personal compass through life.

So if you too are at a crossroads and want a better life then just think whether a career in coaching could also be for you.

Wikimedia Conference Netherlands 2007 held on wikis and education

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Sunday, October 28, 2007

Yesterday, a chilly Amsterdam hosted the Wikimedia Conference Netherlands 2007. Held at the Aristo centre in a suburb of the city and run by Wikimedia Netherlands, the conference was a short train ride from Amsterdam Centraal railway station. The topic, Wikis and Education (Wiki’s en Educatie in Dutch). This was an opportunity for Wikimedians and people in education to come together and see how collaboration could help both.

Wikinews freelance reporter Brian McNeil caught a train from Brussels in Belgium and attended, making an impression on the Wikimedia Foundation chair, Florence Devouard, by spilling her coffee over the first two speakers approximately three minutes before they were supposed to officially open the conference.

Celtic FC wins sixth consecutive Scottish Premiership title

Tuesday, April 4, 2017

On Sunday, Glasgow-based football club Celtic F.C. mathematically secured the Scottish Premiership title after defeating Heart of Midlothian F.C. 5–0. Celtic have won the league title for the sixth consecutive season.

Having only dropped four points all season, Celtic claimed victory thanks to a hat-trick from striker Scott Sinclair and a goal each from Patrick Roberts and Stuart Armstrong. Upon claiming the league title, club manager Brendan Rodgers said, “I’m absolutely delighted for the players and everyone connected with the club, I’m really proud of the professionalism, the integrity, the pride and the style with which the team have played. This is what we wanted to create.”

For Rodgers, Celtic’s triumph marks his first league title as a manager, having narrowly missed out on the Premier League trophy with Liverpool F.C. in 2014. Speaking on the club’s success, he said, “I couldn’t think of a better place for me to be at this stage of my life”, “It’s only the beginning of the cycle. It’s exciting to see the growth, the development.”

Celtic secured the title with eight matches still to be played and without losing a match. Should the club manage to extend their unbeaten through to the end of the season it would be the first time in the club’s history the feat has been achieved in a 38-match campaign. Celtic have a potential chance to complete a first domestic treble since 2001, having already won the Scottish League Cup and having qualified for the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup later in April.

Investigation into Washington, D.C. Metro crash finds need for new safety rules

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

An investigation into the fatal 2009 Washington Metro train collision conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) called for new safety and maintenance rules. The report, released today, blamed the crash on the faulty automatic train-control system. The report also cited the use of dated 1000-Series train cars. The 2009 crash, which killed 9 and injured 80, occurred during the evening rush between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations on the Red Line.

NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said that the system is currently regulated by state and local agencies. She called for Federal oversight. “Now it’s really time for them to step up to the plate and for Congress to address the issue,” Hersman said during the release of the findings.

In 2009, Hersman told Congress that Federal safety guidelines should be set saying “the state oversight system is not effective, they don’t have any teeth.” Currently the Federal government has control of interstate transit systems, not regional or local transit systems.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) said yesterday that it would replace all of it’s 1000-Series trains with newer models. After the crash, then WMATA general manager, John Catoe said that “the system is safe.” WMATA’s interim general manager Richard Sarles said that “We are committed to considering and following through on the findings and recommendations.”

Ford offers US$78 million for Romanian auto plant

Saturday, September 8, 2007

Ford Motor Company, the U.S. car maker, will reportedly pay €57 million (US$78 million) for a 72.4 percent stake in the Romanian assembly plant Automobile Craiova, a Romanian official said Friday.

“The offer of Ford Motor Company for a 72.4 percent stake is €4.1556 per share or €57 million overall,” said Sebastian Vladescu, head of the State Property Agency (AVAS), after opening Ford’s improved offer. Vladescu added that the contract may be signed on September 12, during the auto show in Frankfurt.

The Romanian government bought back the Craiova-based car maker from Daewoo Motors, in late 2006 for US$51 million. As the Korean company was bankrupt, the government had to pay another $10 million for debts stemming from past loans. Ford is the only bidder for the purchase of the factory.

According to Washington Post, many auto-part makers have set up in the new European Union member country, attracted by cheap labor, favourable tax rates and the rising output of Renault’s Dacia plant. The vice president of Dacia, Constantin Stroe, said that the price Ford offers is not important. “It’s important to have the factory working as soon as possible”, he added. “With this production facility, Romania will become an important auto production center in Europe”, concluded Stroe, cited by HotNews.
