Man charged with attempted murder in £40 million London jewel heist

Sunday, September 6, 2009

24-year-old Aman Kassaye, of no fixed abode, is to face a charge of attempted murder for his alleged role in an armed robbery that netted £40 million ($65 million) worth of jewelry from a London store.

Kassaye is the seventh man to be charged, and is also facing prosecution for conspiracy to rob the Graff store in New Bond Street, false imprisonment, and using a handgun to resist arrest. He will appear at Wimbledon magistrates court on Monday.

The other six men have already been remanded in custody until October 23, when they will appear at Kingston Crown Court. All are facing charges of conspiracy to rob, and two of them are also charged with a firearms offense.

43 diamond rings, watches, and bracelets were taken from the store. The theft occurred when two armed and suited men walked in and took an employee hostage. It has been reported they used prosthetic masks made from liquid latex but police have not confirmed this. Amateur footage also shows a shot was fired. No-one was injured.

The robbery is one of the biggest the United Kingdom has seen. After the crime a string of getaway vehicles was used, with police believing several more offenders assisted with this stage of the plan. Although The Telegraph claims no stolen property has yet been recovered, this is also unconfirmed by police.

Five Clothing Must Haves For Stylish Men

Submitted by: Dawn Gates

With the designer menswear Spring/Summer 2012 collections making the rounds on the catwalks, trend setters are preparing to get the latest in chique.

Nevertheless, if you re a guy like me who wants to look stylish without having to manically follow the latest trends, you ll want some essential wardrobe items that will never go out of favour.

These days, I prefer to distil my personal style by dressing more classically refined on a daily basis wearing clothes that sharply focus on quality, tailoring and versatility rather than being a slave to the fickle trends of fashion.

If you have a similar mindset, the following guide will get you on track by describing five of the most important clothing items for men.

1 – Neutral Coat

A peacoat or simple overcoat in black, navy, grey or camel is something that every man should have, as it will not only compliment most any clothing you decide on, but will prove to be a staple either day or night and in most seasons here in the UK. An overcoat has a more formal look, while a peacoat is slightly more casual chose either depending on your personal preferences. As a tip, your neutral coat should be a few inches longer than your suit jackets, and fitted in size so that it has just enough room to fit them under.

2 – Textured Suit

This type of suit is a seasonal style must-have, as you will wear it not only in one go but also as separate items to match different outfits. For example, in winter you would choose a textured suit made of tweeds, flannels or corduroy, then in spring the jacket will be perfect for evenings when the temperature drops. When summer arrives, a seersucker, whipcord or linen suit will leave you feeling refreshingly cool, but the jacket can be used as your go-to blazer for work or dinner at a restaurant. Essentially, because this kind of suit can be so effectively mixed-and-matched, you will be getting a two-for-the-price-of-one deal.

3 – Pocket Squares

Pocket squares used to be seen as the exclusive domain of older gentlemen or haughty toffs from Eton, but I have news for you they have been making a big comeback over recent years thanks to top designers such as Tom Ford, Dominiqo Vacca and Michael Bastian, as well as TV programmes like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men.

These items can really ad subtle flair to both a formal or casual look. In my opinion though the era of matching your square to your shirt is outdated it s much more interesting to match your pocket square to a certain colour in your tie or simply throw caution to the wind and experiment by opting for whatever colour or pattern strikes your fancy that day. A tip though is to have a few pure white ones to hand for really formal events.

4 Brogues/Wingtips

If you haven t heard these titles before, Wingtips or Brogues are simply the formal type of shoes that we often wear to work. Not only are they a necessity for the office, they also look good for smart-casual wear, such as with jeans, a T-shirt and a blazer. To boost their style credentials, I suggest you go for a pair of brogues that are on the chunky side. They should be sleek and streamlined enough to work with a suit, but still have a chunky enough sole and detailing to look good with jeans. Another tip is to opt for brogues in darker shades, as these tones will go with almost everything. And finally, never wear light brown shoes with black or grey pants or the fashion police will lock you away!

5 – Classic Timepiece

While many blokes will be tempted to choose a watch that has all the bells and whistles, bear in mind that such an item will clash with many items in your wardrobe. For this reason, it s best to choose a neutral, classic timepiece that will look stylish with any outfit you opt for on a particular day ideally it will look elegant with formal wear but casual enough for the weekends. In terms of sizing, 35mm tends to be the best for the average guy. A further tip is to choose a black strap as it is the most versatile, but bear in mind that with a simple pin tool you can change the strap to any colour that strikes your fancy.

Conclusion

The above guide outlines, in my opinion, five of the most crucial must-haves for every guy s wardrobe. Whether you prefer only designer menswear or have a more easy-going mix and match approach wherever you find an item of clothing that appeals to you, with the right touches it will be hard not to look stylish.

The Rise Of Indian Online Shopper

The Rise of Indian Online Shopper

by

smart9361

Sitting in the comforts of your home, today you can browse through the best brands in the world. You can purchase everything you need without having to worry about making it all the way to the mall and finding a parking spot!

Online purchasing as a phenomenon has revolutionized the way businesses and consumers operate in today\\’s world. We are no longer confined by geography or any other dimension for satisfying our shopping needs.

The best deals from world over are a click away, all you need is the appetite to shop backed by a credit card and an Internet connection!

The growth of the online shopping domain has been a slow but steady one in India. The main reason for the same is the low Internet penetration rate in India and the traditional psyche of the consumers who like to \\”touch and feel the product\\”

However, the inevitable paradigm shift from traditional shopping arcades to virtual platforms has taken place, as shown by a survey conducted by Market Research firm – AC Nielsen.

The key findings of the survey are:

More than eight out of ten Indian online consumers plan to shop online in the next twelve months

More than a quarter indicate they spend upwards of 11 percent of their monthly shopping expenditure on online purchases

71 percent Indians trust recommendations from family when making an online purchase decision, followed by recommendations from friends at 64 percent and online product reviews at 29 percent

Half the Indian consumers (50%) use social media sites to help them make online purchase decisions.

Online reviews and opinions are most important for Indians when buying Consumer Electronics (57%), Software (50%), and a Car (47%).

More than four in ten Indians are more likely to share (post a review/ Tweet/ review) a negative product or service experience online than they were to share a positive experience

In the next six months Indians are most likely to buy Books (41%), Airline ticket/reservations (40%), and Electronic equipment like TV, Camera, etc. (36%) online

When shopping online, one third of Indians (33%) purchase most frequently from websites which allow them to select products from many different stores.

The benefits of online shopping are many – the most evident benefit is obviously the ease of use and convenience to shoppers. Online shopping allows users to access compare and analyze various products all at once.

The market has opened up with innovative initiatives from eBay, Futurebazaar, Dealsandyou, Rediff shopping , Yebhi and so forth have escalated the the interest and expectations of compulsive shopaholics.

What is interesting is that the phenomenon of online shopping has caught up not just in a few metros but also in Tier-II and Tier-III cities.

However, on the flip-side, security concerns over online payment continue to pose threat to the growth of these online shopping portals.

The other concerns are :

– The probability of the final delivered product not meeting the expectations of the customers, as you never really see the product till it comes home!

– Risk of mishandling and shipping issues

– Hidden costs and Shipping fee

– Risk of an online fraud

– Spyware concerns – Your personal data can be compromised

– Returning merchandize – The process is much more cumbersome and time consuming than going to a shop and asking for an exchange or return.

With the advent of technology and use of sophisticated payment and distribution channels, these concerns will be taken care of. The future of online shopping is certainly a bright one – with the brick and mortar businesses getting a hang of e-commerce, soon enough everything from a needle to a helicopter will be up for grabs online!

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Polish exercise book advertisement copies Wikipedia content, violates copyright

Friday, October 24, 2008

On August 21, the Polish weekly Przekrój published an advertisement for Dan-Mark exercise books, bearing the logo of 4fun.tv, a Polish music/interactive TV station. Part of the advertisement contained a definition of the word “exercise book”. The wording looked familiar, and Wikinews consulted Wikipedia, the collaborative online encyclopedia.

Upon seeing the Wikipedia definition, it appeared that the entry quoted in the promotional material was identical to the initial two paragraphs of the relevant Wikipedia entry.

Freelance reporters for the Polish Wikinews decided to find out the reason for such a similarity and whether either of the texts (the advertisement’s or Wikipedia’s) might be a case of copyright violation.

The reporters contacted a Jaros?aw Janas, Creative Director of 4fun.tv., where the ad appeared. His reply included the following claim:

Copyright on text does not last for fifty years as claimed by Janas, but for 70 years after the death of the author.

To investigate the authenticity of the above claims, Wikinews asked the main author of the two paragraphs in question, Wikipedian Julo, about the sources used to write the entry. He confirmed that he had written the text in question, and not copied it from an encyclopedic publication as claimed by Jana.

It is therefore impossible that both Julo and the people responsible for the exercise book advertisement have used the same uncopyrighted encyclopedia, thus coincidentally creating identical texts. The reporters also noted that the first draft of the introduction to the article was written by WaldemarWolskiHuta (February 2006). Afterward the text had undergone some modifications by Julo (September 2006), as well as Picus viridis and Beno (March 2008). However, the text presented in the press promotional material, which – according to 4fun.tv – came from an old-print encyclopedia is identical to the Wikipedia entry after the changes mentioned above had been made. Julo added that he was still alive, together with the other authors of the article in question who constituted the group of the copyright co-holders. This naturally led to a conclusion that neither 50 nor 70 years could have passed since their death. He left 4fun.tv’s actions with a comment that although the contents he and the other Wikimedians had made public and free, they are far from making them available in any “free style”, but under a specified license.

In follow up messages to Jaros?aw Janas, Wikinews reporters confronted the creative director over his seemingly inaccurate claims.

Wikinews was told in a reply that 4fun.tv would ignore the claims unless they see permission from the author of the original content to investigate this story. They were also informed that further e-mails without any specifics sent by the reporter would be qualified as spam. 4fun.tv’s creative director further added that he found the reporter’s picture on the Internet and asked how the person would feel if this picture was to appear on billboards or press releases that advertised the TV station.

Wikipedia does allow copying of its content under certain conditions. The encyclopedia’s content is released under the GNU Free Documentation License, which means that it can be copied, modified, and used commercially and non-commercially – under the conditions that the license’s text is included with the copied content and the five main authors are mentioned. If a part of the article is used, like in the example quoted in this news story, a “right to quote”, recognized by Polish law, may be used. In such a case it suffices to mention the source of the text (Polish Wikipedia) and the author of the excerpt. 4fun.tv met none of these conditions, meaning that copyright has been violated.

Over a year ago Polish Wikinews reported on a similar problem, regarding the use of free-licensed photographs. Since that time such “borrowings” have become less frequent, however photos are still being used in discordance with the license. Journalists have gotten used to citing sources, e.g. Wikipedia, although licensing conditions require attributing the actual author, not the source. So instead of attributing John Doe for his contribution, agencies like Polska Agencja Prasowa (Polish Press Agency) are attributing the source, Wikipedia.

In early September 2008 a similar situation occurred in relation to the Polish edition of Wiktionary. Gazeta Wyborcza, a Polish daily, published an IKEA advertisement, on the opening page of which an almost word-for-word Wiktionary entry was placed; additionally the advertisement used the characteristic MediaWiki layout. The reference to the external source used was missing.

In April 2008, an example of an Australian professor was cited; the scientist, in a reply to a news story, quoted a Wikipedia definition almost word-for-word. The same professor condemned the use of Wikipedia in his previous press appearances.

In 2005 Wikipedia material was discovered in the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel, which acknowledged its fault and published appropriate apologies in place of the article in the online edition.

Frontline magazine in 2007 was found using an image from Wikipedia without proper credit. When pointed out the magazine acknowledged the failing and a correction was promptly given in the subsequent issue.

Belgian bus company knows solution for car parking problems

Monday, May 21, 2007

Do you have a hard time finding a parking space? Take the bus or tram if you go to the city. That’s the message Belgian bus company De Lijn (The Line) is sending to promote public transport as a solution for car parking problems. As a part of their media campaign, they have jokingly suggested that people use the top of the busses as parking space.

Another idea they are using in their media campaign: maybe you could park your car on the bottom of a canal? The bus company is using an invented diving company called Cardive, which has divers that offer to dump your car in the canal. The divers walk around in cities and hand out free bus tickets and maps of the bus network.

To reach car drivers who are not using public transport, the media campaign has several radio commercials that present other solutions to the car parking problem. You could use “asphalt-spray” to camouflage your car, making it invisible for policemen (although you then need to remember where you’ve parked). Or you could use the “flat tire kit”, which comes with a fake flat tire and an inflatable dummy, so it looks like you’re replacing your flat tire. The final idea the bus company has is to use a View-Master to fool parking guards into believing that your car has been stationed correctly.

A survey among 4000 customers of De Lijn shows that two out of three car owners who use public transport, do so to avoid parking space troubles, and in cities this percentage rises to 90%. The survey further shows that 39% use the bus to go shopping.

During the month of May, the auto-bus and the divers tour several cities in Flanders (Leuven, Hasselt, Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp).

Press Release: “Vermijd parkeerproblemen met De Lijn!” — De Lijn, May 19, 2007 (Dutch)
