History

The SAS began in 1954 to plan a flight route between Europe and the West Coast of the United States over the polar route in advertising as \”SAS Polar Short Cut\” was called. The first commercial flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles was held on 16 November 1954 with a piston-driven engine Douglas DC-6 instead. Orders for the first jet-powered Douglas DC-8 , which should be used on the route certified, the SAS in 1955 and was expecting delivery from 1958.Therefore, the marketing department expected an increase in tourist traffic in Copenhagen, particularly from the United States, for a new hotel would be built.

The building should serve not only as a hotel, but also as a terminal for the processing of passengers of the SAS. Offices for the administration should continue to be provided in order to concentrate the distribution of offices located within Copenhagen airline in one place. With the Copenhagen Airport Kastrup should be a shuttle bus connection to be established. The plans for the building began in 1955th By Kampmann, then director of the airline, commissioned Arne Jacobsen in 1956 the hotel and its interior plan. Creatively, the SAS wanted a place that represented the jet age, and a monument representing Danish design.

Planning and reception

During the procurement, the basic dimensions of the building already by the client and the Copenhagen city planning were defined. Jacobsen designed in these specifications, a 20-storey skyscraper, which, like nearly all modern high-rise buildings of the era, built in 1952 by Lever House by Gordon Bunshaft was inspired. The curtain wall , the separation of curtain wall and load-bearing skeleton, the slender tower on the broad overlapping shelf and bracing building cores with lifts, equipment and ancillary rooms formed a type of building, which was in the late 1950s, almost a paradigm of modern architecture. Denmark was in the SAS Royal Hotel, the first idea of the style in a prominent position in the middle of the capital.
