5-year-old girl handcuffed by Florida police

Sunday, April 24, 2005

St. Petersburg, Florida police were taped on video handcuffing a five-year-old kindergarten student who had earlier torn papers off a bulletin board and punched an assistant principal. The camera happened to be filming on March 14 as part of a classroom self-improvement exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary. Video of the event has been released by a lawyer for the child’s mother.

The little girl had already calmed down from her tantrum by the time of arrival of the police, but they cuffed her anyway. Police had been called when a phone call to mother Inga Akins, had led teachers to believe that it would take an hour for Ms Akins to arrive and take the girl away.

The video reportedly shows three officers pin the passive girl’s arms behind her back and put on handcuffs, as she screams, “No!”

Attorney for the mother, John Trevena, called the incident “incomprehensible”. He provided the tape to the media this week, after obtaining it from police.

“The image itself will be seared into people’s minds when you have three police officers bending a child over a table and forcibly handcuffing her,” said Mr Trevena.

Police planned to investigate the incident and make public the findings in around two weeks.

5 Things Of Io T Security}

5 Things of IoT Security

by

Dr Rajiv Srivastava

The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items entrenched with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity which enable these objects to connect and exchange data. Each thing is exclusively identifiable through its entrenched computing system but is able to inter-operate within the existing Internet infrastructure.

IoT security is the area of endeavor concerned with safeguarding connected devices and networks in the Internet of things.

The Internet of Things involves the increasing use of objects and entities known, in this context as things — provided with unique identifiers and the ability to automatically transfer data over a network. Much of the increase in IoT communication comes from computing devices and embedded sensor systems used in industrial machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, smart energy grids, home and building automation, vehicle to vehicle communication and wearable computing devices.

The main trouble is that because the idea of networking appliances and other objects is relatively new, security has not always been considered in product design. IoT products are often sold with old and unpatched embedded operating systems and software. Furthermore, purchasers often not succeed to change the default passwords on smart devices — or if they do change them, fail to select sufficiently strong passwords. To improve security, an IoT device that needs to be directly accessible over the Internet, should be segmented into its own network and have network access restricted. The network segment should then be monitored to identify potential abnormal traffic, and action should be taken if there is a problem.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly emerging as the manifestation of the Networked Society vision: where everything that benefits from a connection is connected. But the assumptions of trust which formed the backdrop to the early development of the internet no longer apply in the early stages of IoT development. Privacy and security concerns are ever increasing, especially given the growing significance of IoT in corporate, government, and critical infrastructure contexts.

So, five main things you should know about IoT are:

1.Cost Savings

In addition to the optimal utilization of energy and resources, the IoT helps alleviate the problems associated with bottlenecks, breakdowns and system damages. IoT mainly proves to be very helpful to people in their every day routines by making the appliances communicate to each other in an effective manner thereby saving and conserving energy and cost. Allowing the data to be communicated and shared between devices and then translating it into our required way, it makes our systems efficient.

2.Communication

IoT allows physical devices to stay connected and better communicate, which creates greater quality control. IoT encourages the communication between devices, also famously known as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication. Because of this, the physical devices are able to stay connected and hence the total transparency is available with lesser inefficiencies and greater quality.

3.Automation and Control

Automation leads to consistency in tasks, quality of service and control of day-to-day tasks without human intervention. Machine-to-machine communication also helps maintain transparency throughout the process. Due to physical objects getting connected and controlled digitally and centrally with wireless infrastructure, there is a large amount of automation and control in the workings. Without human interference, the machines are able to communicate with each other leading to faster and timely output.

4.Efficient and Saves Time

The machine-to-machine interaction provides better efficiency, hence; accurate results can be obtained fast. This results in saving valuable time. Instead of repeating the same tasks every day, it enables people to do other creative jobs.

5. Privacy and Security

As many of our daily appliances, machines and services become connected to the internet, much more information is readily available. It makes it harder to keep confidential information out of the hands of hackers and other unauthorized users. Since there is involvement of multiple devices and technologies, there is monitoring by multiple companies, which directly questions the security over privacy issues. Data storage and retrieval also becomes a prime concern for the companies as all of them are involved at the same time. In case of keeping a single company, it may lead to a domination question.

Ultimately, you have to agree that the Internet of Things presents new technological opportunities across various dimensions. If properly implemented, it could offer a host of new possibilities for your business as well.

Owsley Stanley, icon of 1960s counterculture, dies at 76

Thursday, March 17, 2011

Owsley Stanley, mass-producer of LSD, the drug underlying much of the culture of the 1960s California hippie era, died Sunday in a car accident in Australia at the age of 76, his family announced on Tuesday.

According to The New York Times, “Mr. Stanley lent the ’60s a great deal of its color — like White Lightning, Monterey Purple and Blue Cheer, the varieties of his LSD that were among the most popular.”

Stanley, a talented, self-taught chemist who was known for the purity of his LSD, supplied the drug to such music groups as the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix, and provided the acid for Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, whose antics were recorded by Tom Wolfe in the The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The Rolling Stones once called his acid “the best LSD in the world … the genuine Owsley.”

He was also an early sound engineer and designed the high-fidelity sound system for the live rock concerts of the Grateful Dead, known as the “wall of sound”. It was essentially a massive public address system made up of 600 speakers that enabled musicians to mix their sound from the stage and reduce distortion. His recordings of Grateful Dead live performances, some having been commercially released, are valued as a documentary of their early music.

Sam Cutler, formerly the tour manager of the Rolling Stones, said of Stanley: “He was a very sophisticated man, an amalgam of scientist and engineer, chemist and artist.”

I remember the first time I took acid and walked outside, and the cars were kissing the parking meters

Stanley was born in Kentucky and studied engineering briefly at the University of Virginia before dropping out and joining the Air Force. In 1958, he moved to California and worked at a wide variety of jobs, before enrolling at the UC at Berkeley in 1963, at a time when drug use was pervasive. He got his first taste of LSD in April 1964 which transformed him. “I remember the first time I took acid and walked outside, and the cars were kissing the parking meters,” he said in an interview with the Rolling Stone Magazine in 2007.

Deciding to provide his own LSD to ensure its quality, Stanley created his own lab to produce it. According to The Washington Post, “Working at first from a makeshift bathroom laboratory in Berkeley, Mr. Stanley produced at least 1 million doses of LSD between 1965 and 1967.” His LSD was widely distributed. The lab was raided and he spent two years in prison.

Stanley moved to Australia in the 1980s when he become convinced the Northern Hemisphere would be destroyed in the coming of a new ice age. He lived in the Australian bush near Cairns, Queensland.

Apple introduces iPhone and Apple TV

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Apple Inc. today has introduced the much-anticipated iPhone at the Macworld Conference in San Francisco.

The iPhone is claimed to be “a revolutionary mobile phone” as stated on the Apple website. The device appears to be running a mobile version of the Apple operating system Mac OSX. It is approximately the same size as a 5th generation iPod, it has a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen display that is used to access all features of the phone including number dial, as well as making phone calls. The iPhone plays music, movies, displays pictures and is able to connect to a wireless network.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the device by walking onto the stage and taking the iPhone out of his jeans pocket. During his 2 hour speech he stated that “Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone, We are going to make history today”.

Today Apple also released their Media Center device – Apple TV. It will directly compete with Microsoft’s Media Center operating system. Apple has taken a different approach to the media center market; rather than storing content (such as movies, music and photos) on the device, Apple TV connects to a computer (Mac and Windows) over a wirless network connection and plays all content stored on that computer. This makes it substantially easier for users to organize their media content.

New fossils from 10 million year old ape found in Ethiopia

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Researchers say that new, ten million-year-old fossils found in Ethiopia, prove that the theory that humans may have evolved from a species of great apes eight million years ago, may not be true, but that humans may have split from apes as long as 10.5 million years ago.

At least nine fossilized teeth, one canine tooth and eight molars, of a previously unknown species of apes found in Africa were discovered by a team of researchers from Ethiopia and Japan who then compared the 3-D make up of the teeth to other fossils that date back as far as 8 million years and found that the fossils are likely a “direct ancestor” of apes currently living in Africa and that the new ape fossils were that of a species of gorilla who ate mostly plants high in fiber.

Current fossils and research say that the evolutionary split from apes to humans occurred at least eight million years ago. The new fossils say that the split may have happened as long as 10.5 million years ago.

“Based on this fossil, that means the split is much earlier than has been anticipated by the molecular evidence. That means everything has to be put back,” said researcher at the Rift Valley Research Service in Ethiopia and a co-author of the study, Berhane Asfaw.

Despite the finds, other researchers are not convinced that the findings are correct.

“It is stretching the evidence to base a time scale for the evolution of the great apes on this new fossil. These structures appear on at least three independent lineages of apes, including gorillas, and they could relate to a dietary shift rather than indicating a new genetic trait,” said a Professor at the London Natural History Museum in the United Kingdom, Peter Andrews who also added, “but the fossil evidence for the evolution of our closest living relatives, the great apes, is almost non-existent.

Researchers have named the newly discovered species Cororapithecus abyssinicus whose remains were found in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, the same place where the remains of Lucy were discovered in 1974.

Kenya government fires health worker strikers over failure to ‘report back to work’

Saturday, March 10, 2012

The Kenyan government has dismissed 25,000 striking health workers, mostly nurses, citing failure to heed government orders to recommence work and concern for the welfare of hospital patients. Speaking on behalf of the government, Alfred Mutua stated the workers were dismissed “illegally striking” and “[defying] the directive … to report back to work”, which he called “unethical”. The government asks that “[a]ll qualified health professionals, who are unemployed and/or retired have been advised to report to their nearest health facility for interviews and deployment”, Mutua stated.

The workers, who had been on strike for four days, were wishing to have improvements made to their wages, working conditions, and allowances. The strikes have caused a significant number of Kenyan hospitals to cease operations. According to Kenya Health Professionals Society spokesperson Alex Orina, the average monthly wage plus allowances for health workers in Kenya is KSh25,000 (£193, US$302 or €230) approximately. With an increasing number of reports of patients neglected in hospitals emerging, two trade unions met with the Kenyan government yesterday and negotitated a return to work, although a significant proportion of demonstrators defied the agreement, The Guardian reported.

Orina told Reuters the dismissals were “cat-and-mouse games, you cannot sack an entire workforce. It is a ploy to get us to rush back to work, but our strike continues until our demands are met”. Frederick Omiah, a member of the same society, believed the government’s actions would “make an already delicate and volatile situation worse”, expressing concern that demonstrations may continue in the capital Nairobi, amongst other locations. Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union chairperson Dr. Victor Ng’ani described government actions as “reckless”.

Mutua said the health workers were “no longer employees of the government” and had been eliminated from the payroll. While Ng’ani told the BBC of difficulties with finding other workers as skilled and experienced, Mutua reportedly stated that this would not be an issue. “We have over 100,000 to 200,000 health professionals looking for work today,” Mutua commented. “There will be a lag of a day or two … but it is better than letting people die on the floor, at the gate, or suffer in pain”.

Working With Property Management To Start Your Home Garden

With gas prices on the rise and the recent trend toward local and organic foods, many people have been returning back to their own yards as a source of produce. Growing fruits and vegetables at home is not only a great way to eat fresh and healthy but can also be a relaxing and enjoyable pastime. For those who rent their homes, a goal of home-grown produce can sometimes seem unattainable. However, there are many ways to start your own mini-farm while staying within the guidelines of your home’s property management. You may be pleased to find that your property management is keen on the idea of a small, sustainable garden near your home. Some apartment complexes contain plots of land that serve as community gardens for their tenants. A space for tenants to grow their own vegetables can be viewed as a plus for those searching for a place to settle down. These areas provide a zone for friendly neighborly interaction and can help build a community spirit. If you live in a complex with some open space, consider suggesting a shared garden to your landlord. If space for a full garden is limited, you may be able to use part of a flowerbed to grow smaller plants. A corner of a garden can easily hold small plants like peppers, cherry tomatoes, and baby carrots. Larger plants can also be grown in smaller quantities; try to look for those that yield fruit often instead of those that need to be harvested at the end of a season. Blueberry and blackberry bushes are also great sources of fruit that can blend in well with the other foliage around your house. Of course, you should approach your property management before making any major changes; try coming up with some ideas of plants that grow locally before asking permission. If you don’t have access to a flowerbed or your rental area is in an urban area without much green space, there are several ways to grow plants from containers and planters. One popular device allows you to grow tomatoes upside-down. Soil is suspended from a container hung from a pole, usually over a grassy area. A hole in the container allows plants to grow down and out of the bottom. The device is unobtrusive and easily removable. Many different types of vertical planters exist as well. These planters are designed for urban environments and provide several pots arranged vertically in one compact container. If you live in an apartment, window planters are an easy way to grow beans and peppers.Wherever you live, a simple but satisfying option is a herb garden. Plants like cilantro, basil, and mint are very easy to grow and can add a fresh kick to your cooking. Most herbs are small and do not take up much space. Any of the spaces mentioned are suitable for these small plants, though planters and pots can often keep the fast-growing herbs from overtaking a garden or smothering a neighboring plant. Plus, maintaining a simple herb garden might convince your property management that you’re a great candidate to upgrade to a larger garden. There are many other ways to start a garden; it’s only a matter of finding which work for you and your property management. Just get creative and start simple- your fresh veggies await you.
