A group of around 30 or 40 anarchists launched an attack against a police station in Exarchia, a busy district in central Athens, in Greece. Meanwhile, another 70 hooded individuals launched other attacks. They set fire to vehicles, politician’s offices at the Kolonaki area and various bank departments in Exarhia. Greek Riot police responded with tear gas, while the fight between anarchists and the police still takes place in streets around the University of Athens. It is believed that the youths launched the attack in order to demonstrate their support to prisoners who started an uprising in three major prisons. Another demonstration takes place in Thessaloniki, but without any clashes, so far.

The United States Senate today passed a spending bill that sets a target date of March 31, 2008 for a complete pull-out of United States forces from Iraq. The House of Representatives has already passed a similar measure. The bill also includes US$100 billion for the continuing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

US President George W. Bush “will veto this legislation,” said White House spokesperson Dana Perino. “The president is determined to win in Iraq. The bill they sent us today is mission defeated.”

Colombia was faced with a nationwide electricity outage at 10:15 a.m. local time today. Traffic chaos and people trapped in elevators has been reported. Hospitals and airports continued operations, using their own backup generators.

Speaking on local radio, President Alvaro Uribe said, “It appears to have affected all of the country.”

“The blackout was caused by a failure at an energy substation in northern Bogota. We do not know what type of failure it was,” Manuel Maiguashca, vice minister of energy and mines, told reporters. Speculation that the outage was caused by left wing rebels was dismissed by officials.

Now Is The Time To Get Into Property Rentals

By P Green

Right now is an exceptionally good time to become a buy-to-let investor, according to two separate reports.

Two different firms have announced that market conditions are ideal for people who want to invest their money into property rentals.

And that’s going to be good news for the thousands of people across the UK who have already invested in property, in the hope of giving their pension fund a boost, or of making a faster return on their money than other kinds of investment.

This trend has been partly fuelled by TV property shows, which often show people making a profit from development and property rentals despite little knowledge in the market. The message that many people have received is that virtually anyone can make cash by buying a house, doing it up and selling it or renting it out.

Certainly investment specialists Assetz agrees that it is currently a buoyant market. It recently said that market conditions are ideal for people who want to make a purchase and gain an income from property rentals.

The firm argues that conditions are spot on for medium-term investors, despite fears the housing market is facing a slowdown in growth or could even see falling prices.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors reports that a record number of first-time buyers are currently choosing to rent rather than buy, while they wait to see what happens with the housing market.

And this has apparently put huge pressure on the prices of property rentals. Prices are being forced upwards – there is even talk of record growth rates.

The Association of Residential Letting Agents agrees. It recently declared that demand for rented homes has seriously outstripped supply.

And with the likelihood of interest rates dropping soon, Assetz believes buy to let has a bright future.

A separate investment consultancy agrees that there is huge confidence for investors in the UK property rentals market right now.

Property For Life did a survey into confidence, and said 64 per cent of investors thought the interest base rate had already peaked.

As a result of that, 76% of investors in its October survey thought it was a good time to buy a house and rent it out. That’s an increased confidence since the firm’s last survey in September, when just 72% of people thought that way.

The survey revealed some other fascinating facts about current beliefs in the property rentals market.

52 per cent of people who have a buy to let investment said they are feeling the pinch of interest rates.

Last week the Bank of England held rates, leaving them at 5.75%. Rates have been on hold at that rate for four months in a row, after five rises since August last year. The bank was keen to cool what it saw as an overheating economy.

This happened against a background of the Home Information Packs, or HIPs being introduced for the sale of three and four bedroomed houses. This may have contributed to a slowdown in the growth of house prices.

In the survey, 54 per cent of investors thought the base rate would fall in the coming months. It’s possible that that extra confidence could see even more money invested into the property market, creating more flats and houses to rent.

The results of the Property For Life survey also showed that few investors expected property prices to rise in the next year. Only 38% of people in the survey thought they would see prices go up. That result is down from 48% in the previous month.

In the long-term, investors seem confident that they will see a return on their investment.

Eastern Conference wins 2008 NBA All-Star Game

Monday, February 18, 2008

Eastern Conference 134 128 Western Conference

The Eastern Conference defeated their Western Conference counterparts at the 2008 National Basketball Association All-Star Game held at New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday. The final score was 134-128.

The East took an early 11 point lead in the first 5 minutes, due to an injured Kobe Bryant only playing 2 minutes before sitting on the bench for the rest of the game. “There’s one player we really, really missed, and that was Kobe,” said West coach Byron Scott. The West later reduced the lead to 2 points, but at halftime, the East led 74-65.

The West trailed by 13 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but rallied behind New Orleans point guard Chris Paul, who had seven assists in the final period. With 2:48 remaining, Brandon Roy scored a layup on an assist from Paul, giving the West a 122-119 lead, their biggest lead of the game.

The East then answered back with two three-pointers from Ray Allen, before Chris Paul tied the game with a three-pointer of his own. However, the East would then take the lead and the game with layups from Dwyane Wade and Allen, as well as a driving dunk from LeBron James. A Brandon Roy three-pointer put the game within three points with 8.7 seconds left, but 3 free throws from Ray Allen sealed the win for the East.

“The fourth quarter was crazy,” said Chris Paul. “We were down 13. We picked up the intensity. We took the lead a few times but Ray Allen was unbelievable the way he shot the ball. And that last dunk by LeBron, we had two people on him but that still wasn’t enough.”

With 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists, James was named the All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career. Some television commentators also considered Ray Allen a likely choice for the award, with 14 of his 28 points coming in the final 3 minutes of the game. “I think Ray Allen had a heck of a shooting night,” James said after being presented the award.

UN warns of humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Monday, January 5, 2009

Amidst ongoing Israeli bombings of Gaza, with the death toll of the bombardments up to 537 with another 2,500 people wounded, UN food agencies again warned that the people of Gaza are facing a heavy humanitarian crisis.

“The current situation in Gaza is appalling, and many basic food items are no longer available on the market,” Said Christine van Nieuwenhuyse, the World Food Program‘s (WFP) representative in the Palestinian territory, in a statement that was released on Friday. “This area … is one of the poorest and most heavily affected by the recent conflict,” she added.

The current situation in Gaza is appalling, and many basic food items are no longer available on the market.

WFP officials said that they have begun to give bread to 15,000 new recipients, a number which added to the already large group of people that had been lining up for bread after two years of Israeli blockades of Gaza, the most recent of which began in early November. The blockades, surely a catalyst for violent Hamas attacks, have been condemned by Human Rights Watch as a “violation of international humanitarian law.”

Struggling Gazan hospitals say that they are completely out of even the most basic medical supplies and have little or no capacity to deal with further casualties. In addition, Israeli ground forces entered Gaza on Saturday causing an immediate spike in casualties and even attacks on the hospitals and paramedics themselves.

As sewage runs through the streets, many Gazans are trying to flee the area by storming the border with Egypt, a move which Egyptian police blocked on Sunday and are planning to do so again today as Egyptian leaders ordered their policemen to open fire on Gazans trying to flee into Egypt.

Hasan Khalaf, Gaza’s assistant deputy health minister, described the ongoing assault on Gaza as “an Israeli massacre”.

“There is no comparison between what we have and what [Israel] are doing to us. The international community are standing unable to help us, and yet we know they have been helping Israel for tens of years.”

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Inflammation And Nopalea Juice

By Frank Yaconis

It is believed that Nopalea Juice has anti-inflammatory properties, making it one of the few natural remedies to inflammation around. The juice is squeezed from the Nopal Cactus – also known as the Prickly Pear Cactus. The plant has been harvested as far back as during the times of the Aztecs and used for both food and for its medicinal properties.

In the past decade, the importance of reducing inflammation in the body has skyrocketed, as chronic inflammation has been linked to everything from cancer to asthma.

Seven years ago, Time magazine stunned the world with a cover story about inflammation. According to the article, inflammation is the body’s ancient first line of defense on the immunological front. Inflammation fights off the microbes and bacteria that would otherwise be deadly. It only becomes problematic when the body’s immunological response of inflammation doesn’t turn off when the battle is over. Then it becomes chronic.

Chronic inflammation means that the body’s response to exterior attack is turned inward. The results of this appear to be the underlying cause of several diseases, from Alzheimer’s to colon cancer to suffering a heart attack.

According to Time magazine, chronic inflammation can be connected to heart attacks. It is believed that the process of inflammation loosens plaque in arteries, making them rupture and sending the plaque straight through the bloodstream and directly to the heart. It damages nerves cells in the brain and may lead to Alzheimer’s as a result. The inflammation might also spawn cells that turn into cancer. Chronic inflammation is connected to rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis.

Treatment for these diseases has been shown to help against these diseases and other autoimmune disorders, according to Time. However, there are also some scary side effects, such as increasing the likelihood of developing tuberculosis.

There also appears to be some connection between chronic inflammation and allergies and asthma. This discovery excited scientists and led them to the possibility of discovering one treatment for a host of diseases – reducing the inflammation. It is believed that people who smoke or eat high-fat diets are more susceptible to the complications from chronic inflammation.

As part of the research, it was discovered that people taking medication for arthritis were less likely to develop colon cancer. More studies are taking place every day since the 2004 Time article was published. Reducing inflammation is one reason older people are advised to take a baby aspirin each day to prevent heart attacks and strokes – aspirin is a known anti-inflammatory drug.

Scientists have also made a connection between chronic inflammation and diabetes. The theory is that for people with diabetes reducing inflammation at key points can actually reverse some of the side effects of the disease. The medical field is looking at whether low-dose aspirin and fish oil capsules will reduce chronic inflammation and therefore the risk of diseases like Alzheimer’s. While research into medical ways to reduce inflammation there are still good old-fashioned ways to do so:

1. Aspirin

2. Statins

3. Beta blockers and ACE inhibitors

4. Losing Weight. Losing weight decreases fat cells which lead to plaque buildup in the blood vessels

5. Exercise. At least 30 minutes of exercise a day

6. Flossing your teeth reduces the incidence of gum disease (chronic inflammation)

7. Avoiding too much saturated fat in your diet. Eating healthy foods such as fish and fruits and vegetables

And of course, I would add, drinking Nopalea Juice – a very easy, natural way to reduce inflammation in the body.

The Lancet study suggests inactivity now as deadly as smoking

Thursday, July 19, 2012

A report published by public-health journal The Lancet suggests living a sedentary lifestyle is now as-fatal for individuals as smoking. Compiled by 33 research workers, the report speaks of a “pandemic” in which an estimated one-in-three adults worldwide are inactive, leading to approximately 5.3 million fatalities from this.

Research for The Lancet established people in higher-income countries are more inactive than those where lower incomes prevail. The study indicated nearly two-in-three adults in the United Kingdom are not active enough. “Roughly three of every 10 individuals aged 15 years or older — about 1.5 billion people — do not reach present physical activity recommendations,” states the report, publicised in the approach to the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Pedro Hallal, a lead researcher for the study, explained: “With the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games, sport and physical activity will attract tremendous worldwide attention. Although the world will be watching elite athletes from many countries compete in sporting events […] most spectators will be quite inactive. The global challenge is clear – make physical activity a public health priority throughout the world to improve health and reduce the burden of disease.” Faculty of Public Health president Professor Lindsey Davies spoke of a similar theory: “We need to do all we can to make it easy for people to look after their health and get active as part of their daily lives […] Our environment has a significant part to play. For example, people who feel unsafe in their local park will be less likely to use it.” According to BBC Health, exercising can assist in strengthening one’s bones, as well as assisting with issues such as insomnia and depression.

However, BBC News Online reported the comparison of a sedentary lifestyle with smoking has been called into question, as smoking is more likely to cause death. At-issue is comparing the number of smokers with the significantly lower number of individuals living sedentary lifestyles. Dr. Claire Knight from Cancer Research UK asserts: “When it comes to preventing cancer, stopping smoking is by far the most important thing you can do.”

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.
