Pakistan frames law against ‘honour killing’

Sunday, October 9, 2016

On Thursday, Pakistan’s parliament announced a bill has been passed against the practice of honour killing. Per the legislation, those convicted of honour killing would be imprisoned for 25 years to life.

In the practice of honour killing, men had the right to kill a female relative deemed to have brought dishonour to the family. Thus, murderers could avoid death-for-death Qisas ((ar))Arabic: ?retribution in kind by paying blood money according to Diyya ((ar))Arabic: ?blood money in Shari’a law.

The legislation, which was jointly approved by upper and lower parliament, allows the perpetrator to avoid the death penalty if the victim’s family forgives him, but the convict still faces imprisonment.

Last year, more than 1000 honour killing cases were reported in Pakistan. The legislation was presented as eliminating loopholes from past legislation against honour-killing. Pakistani human rights activist Farzana Bari noted the judge has unrestricted power to choose whether the murder qualifies as honour killing.

Asserting in parliament that 17,000 females in Pakistan have eloped since 2014, Conservative senator Hafiz Hamdulla later told the Associated Press, “They are trying to impose Western culture over here. We will not allow […] We will impose the law that our holy Quran and Sunnah say”.

The parliament also passed an anti-rape law mandating a DNA test. According to Shari’a law, proof of rape calls for multiple eyewitnesses. According to the legislation, the rapist of a minor or disabled person would face life imprisonment or a death sentence.

After the bill against honour killing was passed, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said, “Women are the most essential part of our society and I believe in their empowerment, protection and emancipation.”

The Benefits Of Wearing Sunglasses While On The Computer}

Submitted by: Alan K Kappauf

I have run into many bizarre things in my life; things that would absolutely blow you away. But this one definitely takes the cake. I know how crazy this sounds, and you may have heard this one before: wearing sunglasses while using the computer can help protect your eyes from the nasty hidden effects of your monitor. This seems very strange on the surface, so strange in fact that it begs the question; is this an urban legend or is there some truth to it? Does wearing sunglasses while using the computer really help to protect your eyes? Well, I actually looked into it and as you might expect, the answer is both yes and no.

Generally speaking, sunglasses are used by different people for different purposes other than just shielding eyes from direct sunlight. For example, sunglasses are helpful for drivers to reduce the glare from horizontal surfaces such as the road, as well as to protect them from being blinded by the headlights of an oncoming vehicle.

Athletes also wear sunglasses, albeit for a different purpose. Athletes such as skiers, golfers, and tennis players all need protective eyewear to keep out the harsh UV rays of the sun. The lenses they wear are often specially-coated to keep reflective light out, which is said to help with precision and accuracy. A good quality pair of sunglasses can offer one hundred percent protection from the sun’s rays, and helps athletes keep on top of their game as well.

So, back to the original question; what about wearing sunglasses while on the computer? Well, research has definitely shown that it actually does help protect your eyes. You can choose from hundreds of different designs of sunglasses and have them fitted with prescription or anti-glare lenses specifically made for computer monitors. These are ideal for people who spend long hours in front of the computer, especially older computers which often have very intense graphic displays that are not kind to the eyes. Wearing specially-coated lenses can help minimize the eye strain caused by being in front of the computer for too long.

However, if you want to give this a try, make sure you wear sunglasses that are appropriate for this activity. For example, you will want lightly-tinted lenses that are not too dark, because dark lenses are not ideal for reading onscreen text and can result in seriously-strained eyes. Additionally, ordinary sunglasses picked up at a convenience store may not do the trick. The only way for sunglasses to help protect your eyes while you work in front of the computer is if they have special anti-glare lenses.

In conclusion, specific types of sunglasses are made for specific types of activities, and working on the computer is no exception. Yes it sounds odd and this technique is certainly not for everyone, but for some people this could actually help preserve their vision. Just be careful and make sure you only wear sunglasses that are appropriate for the task; otherwise, you could actually do more harm than good.
